February Week Four Saturday 24th 2007
This weekend was mainly spent at home and the main activity consisted of organising our seeds into sowing times and planting a few early crops indoors to germinate.
"Seed Selection"
Some of the seeds we are using this year we have not sown before and so will be useful for experimentation purpose. However, we are salvaging older packets of seed and purchasing some of the same varietiues as last year, so that the knowledge gained of varieties which fair well in our soil is not lost.
The seedlings sown indoors are detailled below and all apart from the leeks have been sown in individual modules, with as few seeds as possible (depending on thier size and handlability) to prevent the need for extensive re-potting. The leeks have been sown in a new technique reccomended on a recent garden programme, in large deep pots to allow them to grow to a good size and have an extensive root system before dibbing holes for them and transplanting.
"Leeks"
These were planted in moist seedling compost and transferred to a spare room in our home for germination, we do have a conservatory, but no heater for it currently and as such it is still too cold to raise the soil temperature to a neccesary level. As soon as the seedlings are strong enough they will be cloched and placed in the conservatory and from thier into a small outside greenhouse for "hardening off".
